Mathanga pachadi – A curd based curry with pumpkin


Pachadi is a yogurt based authentic Kerala recipe and it’s one of the side dish served with Onam Sadya(feast).  This dish is having close resemblance with raita, a North Indian dish. Pachadi is very tasty and easy to make recipe. There are many varieties of pachadi served with sadya, such as beetroot pachadi, pinapple pachadi, vellarikka pachadi.  Riped yellow pumpkin is the main ingredient for making Mathanga pachadi, which has a sweet taste of pumpkin, sourness of yogurt and pungent flavour of green chillies. If you have kids at home, serve this curry with rice, they will love it. 

Today I will explain how to make Kerala style Mathanga pachadi. See the ingredients and follow the instructions with pictures to make the easy recipe at your home. 
Ingredients 
  1. Yellow pumpkin – 250 gms
  2. Slightly sour Curd  - 1 cup
  3. Green chillie – 4-5
  4. Cumin seed – ¼ tablesppon
  5. Grated coconut – ½ cup
  6. Small onions – ½ piece
  7. Turmeric powder – ½ tablespoon

Tampering
  1. Mustard seed – ½ table spoon
  2. Small onion – ½ piece
  3. Oil – 2 table spoon
  4. Dry red chilli - 1

Instructions
  • Cut pumpkin into cubes and green chillies in round shape. Keep it aside.
  • Add grated coconut, cumin seeds and turmeric powder into a blender. Blend all till you get a smooth pure.

  • Cook the pumpkins and green chillies with little bit of salt and turmeric powder till the pumpkin cubes are tender.
  • Add coconut pure to the cooked pumpkin and sauté it for 1-2 minutes. Let it cool for some time.
  • Take curd into a vessel and add the cooked pumpkin coconut mixture to it.
  • Add salt to taste. Mix it well. Slightly smash the pumpkin with the bottom of the spoon.
 
  • Heat oil in a pan. Add sliced onions into it.  Crackle the mustard seeds. Finally add dried red chilli. Pour this into the pumpkin curry.
  • Tasty creamy pumpkin pachadi is ready. Serve it with hot rice/ dosa.
